If you've ever picked up a packet of coffee in a store, you've probably seen the word Arabica or Robusta. But what does it actually mean? And does it make a difference to your daily cup of coffee? The answer is: absolutely. We'll explain it to you.
Two types, one drink
Coffee comes from the coffee plant, but not all coffee plants are the same. The two most common varieties are Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora, better known as Robusta. Together, they account for over 95% of all coffee produced worldwide.
Yet they are completely different in almost every aspect.
Arabica the refined choice
Arabica is the most prized coffee variety in the world and also the most cultivated. Approximately 60% of all coffee worldwide is Arabica.
Where does it grow? Arabica grows at altitudes between 600 and 2200 meters in cool, humid climates. Ethiopia, Colombia, Brazil, and Burundi are well-known production regions. The higher the cultivation, the slower the bean ripens and the more complex the flavor.
What does it taste like? Arabica has a soft, complex taste with little bitterness. Depending on its origin, you might taste floral notes, fruit, citrus, chocolate, or nuts. It is the coffee for those who want to enjoy nuance and character.
The caffeine content of Arabica contains less caffeine than Robusta, about 1 to 1.5% per bean. That sounds like a disadvantage, but it's precisely one of the reasons why Arabica tastes softer and less bitter.
Robusta the powerful choice
Robusta is tougher, stronger, and less sensitive than its counterpart. The name says it all: robust.
Where does it grow? Robusta grows at lower altitudes in warmer, more humid climates. Vietnam, Uganda, and Brazil are major producers. The plant is more resistant to diseases and insects, which simplifies cultivation.
What does it taste like? Robusta has a strong, more bitter taste with a nutty or earthy undertone. Less complexity, but more body and a firm crema: that's why it's often used in espresso blends and instant coffee.
The caffeine content of Robusta contains almost twice as much caffeine as Arabica, about 2 to 2.7%. This makes it stronger and more bitter, but also more resistant to pests and diseases.
